As a final loose cannonball on deck, I would like to extend this model further, and say that the cardiac pulse itself may be attributable to converging resonance patterns from the venous and arterial systems. The very existence of a flow infers a chaotic resonance, which itself infers a pulse. The ancient chinese belief that the blood pumps the heart could then actually be fact! The body is a huge collection of chickens and eggs. I would very much like to hear of any research which has definitively found the ECG pulse to cause cardiac beat. I wonder if the heart is like the stormclouds of the tropics - a great electrical generator for the body - and the ECG spark is actually almost like a battery to feed the cells of the body with the electricity they require for life. The chaotic nature of the system would still allow a pacemaker to work - its just that the driving force would be coming from the opposite end of the system to that which normally takes place. I would also expect a pacemaker-fitted body to be less adaptable to local blood flow requirements - e.g. a sluggishness at diverting blood to the digestive system, not because the heart cannot beat faster, but because the resonance patterns are less adaptable..
